What is an ITMO

The New Home for Article 6.2 and Voluntary Credits ITMO Registry ®
An ITMO (Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcome) is a UN-backed carbon credit representing one metric tonne of CO₂ (or CO₂ equivalent) reduced or removed. These credits are authorized for transfer between countries under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement and are used to help nations meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). A key feature is the use of “corresponding adjustments,” which safeguard environmental integrity by preventing double-counting.
ITMOs are produced by the same projects as Voluntary Credits. All Credits are issued from operational projects with 3rd-party Monitoring and Verification Reports that confirm the emission reductions via Avoidance or Removal, based on tons of CO2e. A voluntary credit may only become an ITMO if it is approved and meets the Nations UNFCCC  Paris Article 6 requirements.
Article 6.2 and 6.4 of the Paris Agreement facilitate international carbon trading to meet NDC targets, with 6.2 allowing flexible, decentralized bilateral trading of ITMOs, while 6.4 establishes a centralized, UN-supervised mechanism for high-quality credits. Key differences involve Article 6.2 (Decentralized Cooperative Approaches)
Definition: Provides a flexible, decentralized framework for countries to trade emission reductions, known as Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), via bilateral or multilateral agreements.
Governance: Country-led; participants are responsible for reporting and ensuring authorized, high-quality units.
ITMO Registry leverages cutting-edge technology, built by Global Environmental Markets Pty Ltd (GEM), to establish itself as a global leader in delivering user-friendly, fully transparent, and verifiable carbon credits. Each carbon credit issued by ITMO originates from rigorously vetted projects that undergo comprehensive approval, including Project Design review and independent third-party Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes, guaranteeing the highest quality of verified Global Carbon Credits (GCCs). Purchasers of ITMO carbon credits benefit from direct connection to the underlying projects and the diverse co-benefits or SDGs these initiatives generate.
Buyers of Global Carbon Credits (GCCs) may transact directly through the Registry (Over The Counter or OTC) or electronically via our strategic partner: Carbon Trade eXchange (CTX). Upon purchase, buyers receive certificates along with online verification links, acknowledging their voluntary commitment to carbon offsetting. Project developers can sell credits either directly from their ITMO Registry accounts or via brokers on CTX or other trading platforms.
